  • @locomademoiselle
    @locomademoiselle 3 дня назад

    Also, logwood usually packs a real punch, so I'd possibly question the quality of the dye extract if you repeat the test with less water and higher WOF%. And you should have lots of dye left over for 1 or 2 exhaust baths 😅🤔 Logwood works well in a solar dye method too! I'd also leave your yarns to cool in the mordant bath overnight too ❤ Love your videos as I don't know much about acid dyeing but know more about natural dyeing, so it's nice to see your experiments!! ❤ awesome you got such great results from Indigo! I'm yet to set up a vat, but I think this year I shall finally get round to doing it! Thank you for the inspiration/push ❤😅xxx

    I never thought I would be interested in such complicated dyeing, but it is so pretty that I may; Please do some shows with acrylic. I used Baby Bee Sweet Delight for yarn ties, thinking that they would not dye. They turned the same color as the wools; The yarn is 40% polyamide, which, I think, is what takes the dye.. I love it for making children's toys. I also used it for a African Wildflowers shawl that I dyed in 96 colors. Because of the waste, It was costing me a fortune to dye small amounts of alpaca. I switched to the acrylic and the whole shawl was $15.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials 4 дня назад

      Polyamide (nylon) is one of the few synthetics that you can dye with acid dyes. The polyamide structures is similar to the proteins that are in wool etc (proteins are polyamides). Acrylic and polyester won't work with this type of dyeing, but you CAN dye wool/acrylic blends!

    Do you ever feel unhappy with a color and then process it again in a dye bath? Does it affect the yarn by processing it multiple times?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials 5 дней назад

      I don't often feel unhappy with the finished color because of my approach of "I wonder what will happen if I do xyz" (Whether that is a technique, combining colors, etc.) however, you absolutely can overdye yarn if you're not happy with the final color. Processing it multiple times should be fine. If the fibers are more delicate then maybe I would be concerned (if it had a super fuzzy halo I might worry about felting.) But I've done 3 -4 step dyeing processes on different colorways before.

    Never heard of alpaca super wash. I use a lot of camelid yarn as I am not allergic to it. I accidentally put a pair of alpaca fingerless mitts in with my regular cold wash (left in a pocket) and dryer. Came out felted and super soft. I only made scarves hats mitts or shawls with it. Recently I found that I am not allergic to superwash merino. No irritation or hives! Having fun with wool for the first time! Interested in results of your experiment!❤❤😂🎉

    I really would like it if you were to do a video on safe disposal of artificial and natural dyes and mordants. Disposing of leftover mordant baths, depending on which metal it is made from, can be dangerous to kids and pets if dumped out in the back yard willy-nilly, and if copper sulfate gets into a storm drain that leads to a local stream or river, it can play havoc on the water course's ecosystem.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials 6 дней назад

      This is a great suggestion. This is one reason why I don't use copper sulfate for a mordant even though it can apparenty make cool colors.

  • @bernadettecrumb9143
    @bernadettecrumb9143 7 дней назад

    I remember from the textile arts class I took back in my Freshman year of high school, we used alum for our mordant bath. We added the yarn skeins to it and gently raised the heat to a simmer and soaked our yarn in that for a while. It has been over 40 years since then so I can't recall the exact amount of time but since the class time was only an hour, it was definitely less than that. Since it was a once a week class, our teacher had us hang up the mordanted yarn to dry. The following Wednesday we used yellow onion skins to make our dyebath which we strained into a different dye pot and sealed it up to finally dye the yarn the following Wednesday. Our instructor put the mordanted skeins into a tub of water to pre-soak about an hour before the class started. We added the skeins to the dye bath and slowly raised the heat to just below boiling. After the yarn was the color we wanted (a bright golden yellow) we removed half of the skeins from the dye bath and put them in a flat pan to cool before washing it. Then our teacher added the iron salts to the dyebath (I think that she had added them to warm water to dissolve them) and that is when we saw the color shift on the yarn. The iron shifted the golden yellow yarn to a darker, browner shade of gold. She told us that iron will make the yarn more brittle, so you don't want to leave your yarn soaking in it for extended periods of time. I had planned to do natural dyeing this summer but "life happened" and I haven't had a chance to do anything with it. I am very interested in working with cochineal and using calcium carbonate and iron to see what color shifts they would cause.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials 6 дней назад

      I also read that I can dry out the mordanted yarn, which maybe is something I should plan to do so I can prep more yarn in advance. My earthues instructions say that it can cool in the pot shorter than overnight, but sometimes it is just more practical to let it sit overnight based on my schedule.

    just wondering what would happen if you started with a coloured (I'm English so you get a u) yarn, would a pink go purple or a yellow go green?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials 7 дней назад

      It could! It depends on how long the dips are and the intensity of the original color. I think in the first indigo video this year I overdyed yarn with some purple specks and those got covered up. But many natural dyeing books suggest dyeing a yellow in a kettle and then overdyeing with indigo to get greens. I'm excited to give it a shot someday!

  • @stonewallsfarm3105
    @stonewallsfarm3105 8 дней назад

    Because the indigo exhausts, would tthere have been an even broader range if you had started w one mini skein and added a mini skein with each dip? - producing a lighter lightest, with maybe a more even coverage. Thinking out loud … Great fun! Thank you.

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials 7 дней назад

      This is a really good question. I tihnkt he range would have been more subtle - because if the amount of dye is reduced, you would get less dye with each dip if you add more yarn - giving a softer range. But it is hard to say. I didn't dye anywhere near the 5 lbs of fiber this was enough for so it shouldn't have been reduced too much. I've spent a lot of time thinking about how to do a length of dip dye experiment to keep things as consistant as possible. I think I'd do a short dip first 30 seconds) before doing a longer dip (multiple minutes). This way if the second one is darker it isn't because there was less dye - but if the colors are the same then it measns that the length of dip isn't as important. Maybe. :D

    Yes! Please indigo dye some wool. Does indigo only work in a soda ash ph solution? What happens without soda ash?

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials 7 дней назад

      This hydrosulfite vat needs the soda ash. There are different types of indigo vats you can set up which are more friendly to wool fibers - but my attempt to make an iron vat in the past failed horriby so I tried to extract the indigo and then reserect it as a hydrosulfite vat.

  • @louisalowry6229
    @louisalowry6229 8 дней назад

    I was so happy to hear you say the synthetic and natural indigo are the same molecule- it’s an argument my microbiology trained daughter has with people about chemicals all the time!! Love the gradient 💕

    • @ChemKnitsTutorials
      @ChemKnitsTutorials 7 дней назад

      A natural product is still a nautural product if you make it in the lab vs extract it. The important distinction is that it was discovered from a natural source. Extractions can be expensive and more labor intensive. (A blue pigment would be easier to purify because you can see it, but the solubility issues may make it complicated!) The main problem with indigo - is that indigo is a color name in adition to the name used for the natural source. So there are "indigo dyes" out there that aren't the natural indigo pigment. Those don't require the whole vat set up. Which still makes them fun and beautiful to play with, but aren't the same as this green to blue science magic that happens.

      My hand went through an awkward phase where just the deep groves/wrinkles in my hand were still blue and it make my hand look super old. Of course, I foudna color removing scrub in my dye accessories box that I hadn't tried for years AFTER this was all done. lol.

    Love this! All the indigo videos have been interesting, but I'm a huge fan of fade sets!

    This is a fascinating series. Can't wait to see what's going to happen next! Now I'm wondering about overdyeing-indigo over color _OR_ new color over indigo. Would the order of applying the two different dyes make any noticeable difference?

      The order probably wouldn't make a difference, although I don't know about dyeing yarn with acid dyes and then puttiing it in an indigo vat. Those conditions would likely disrupt the interactions between acid dyes and wool..... Fiber reactive dyes should be fine, though, since those form covalent bonds with cotton.

    I’m guessing if those were in your shop they sold quickly. I didn’t see them 😢

      These haven't gone into my shop yet. I'm hanging onto some of the indigo items for a bit as I may need photos for another project. The good news is that I'll have this for a comparison with other projects I do until I'm ready to list them!

    This is exactly the spell I was talking about last time. When you wring and press the material under the obial surface and then take it out of the vat and watch the white material turn blue. That is magic of the indigo!!

    What a pretty gradient. Watching it turn from green to blue is a lot of fun.
